A transmission medium is required to carry every type of information that travels from source to destination. Cables and connectors are used for transmitting data along a channel. A structured cabling system is the foundation of every business network. Cabling provides connectivity between servers, computers, and other network devices. Hence cables and connectors are part and parcel of each other.

Transmission media used can be wired or wireless. In wired transmission, cables are used for transferring signals whereas in wireless transmission, electromagnetic waves are used to transmit data from one device to another. There are three types of cables used in wired transmission namely twisted pair cables, coaxial cables and fiber optic cables.

· Twisted pair cables are used for transmitting data in small areas. These cables are further divided into two types. Shielded Twisted Pair (STP) and Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP). RJ45 connector is used for connecting UTP cables. UTP is further divided into seven categories based on quality of cable. CAT1 cables are used in telephone lines with small data rate whereas CAT5 is used in LAN connections with high rate of data transfer.

· Coaxial cables carry signals with a frequency higher than that of twisted pair cables. These cables are categorized with the help of Radio Government (RG) ratings. RG-59 cables are used for cable TVs, RG-58 for thin Ethernet and RG-11 for thick Ethernet. BNC connectors are used for connecting coaxial cables.

· Fiber Optic Cables are used for transmitting high speed, longer distance signals with minimum interference. Two types of connectors are used for connecting fiber optic cables. SC connector is used for connecting cable TVs whereas ST connectors are used for establishing connection between networking devices.

Different types of cables and connectors are used for different environments. The inside plant fiber cable systems are used for establishing various connections within a building. Fiber ribbon cables are frequently used for inside plant connections. Outside plant fiber optic systems are used in case of outside or underground cabling.

Cables are also used in security cameras and almost every electronic device. CCTV cables are best for security camera in conjunction with BNC connectors. Connectors can be of crimp type or compression type or modular connectors suiting the requirements. Find out more about cables and connectors by browsing through the internet.

Computers have become a necessity in today’s world with almost every aspect of life being largely dependent on computers. Effective computer systems are required for completing all general and specific purpose tasks. Computers store large data in their memory that serves many functions. Computer adapters and cables are required for their proper functioning. Adapter is the main device that transmits data throughout the system. The entire input and output functioning is based on a computer adapter.

Computer adapters are used for connecting additional enhancements to our system. Various adapters like gender changers, mini centurions adapters etc are used as connective modules for the computer. Various cables are available which have effective adapters for their connection with computers. Ports to connect adapters to the system are available at the backside of a CPU. The adapters are fully braided and shielded for safety purpose. These adapters have ferrite cores on each end which are used to suppress noise.

With more and more people switching over to high definition channels, it is important to know whether your television, cable box, and other entertainment system is able to support high definition. The standards have been HDMI and component cables to carry the HD signals over to the television. For this topic, we’ll discuss what component cables are as well as their benefits and disadvantages.

Though high in quality and suitability, it cannot be easily made to support strong digital signals. Another disadvantage is that it can only carry video signals. With multiple channels (up to 5 cables), it creates more clutter and requires you to have a separate cable just for audio.

Component cables, or RGB, are analog signals compared to their counter parts DVI and HDMI which are digital signals. Analog cables are also very robust and can go up to 200ft without any signal quality issues. However, to make sure you do not get ghosting or ringing the cables must be ideally 75Ω. Component cables are able to carry signals of 480i, 480p, 576i, 576p, 720p, and 1080p. Component cables, however, have been widely used for commercial, professional, and high-end installations.

Some assumptions have been made that ‘digital is always better’. This is not necessarily true. Much of the DVI and HDMI signals are twisted-pair cables which loses the impedance. Digital cables also face a ‘digital cliff’ in which if the cable is too long it becomes harder to reconstruct the bits being carried and could lead to a permanent loss in data. Loss of bits in the bit stream can result in a pixilation on your display making an unclear image.

So is RGB the choice for you? The answer is, “it depends”. Every situation is different and may require some technical support in order to verify the correct solution. But before calling tech support, make sure you list out what cables your monitors can handle as well the distance of the source to the display. You can view SF Cable’s detailed list of component cables here. If you have any questions, please reply to the post or click the live on-line tech support at the SFCable main page.

Refers to electrical and optical cables like Cat5 cables and Optical cables. However, patch cables/cords can be:

single-conductor wires that use banana connectors

coaxial cables using BNC connectors

Ethernet Cat5, Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6a

Optical fiber cables.

What makes a patch cable is its length. Due to its primary use of connecting patch panels, the cables need to be short.

Crossover Cables:

Used when connecting two devices of the same kind to transfer data. Example, if you have a broken computer at home, you can extract the information out with a different computer using a crossover cable to connect the other device without the use of hubs or routers.
